Government is planning a major upgrade to the pumping capacity of Barbados Water Authority reservoirs at St. Stephen’s Hill and Lodge Hill in St. Michael.
According to BWA consultant Dr. John Mwansa, this will be buttressed by the installation of a new high-capacity water main linking the two storage facilities, which together will allow the authority to feed them with more water from the desalination plant at Spring Garden.
The water management expert told the House of Assembly this afternoon during the debate on the 2020-21 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure that these measures would effectively curtail the longstanding challenges faced by residents of districts that include Shop Hill, Redman’s Village and Bagatelle.
In fact, Dr. Mwansa promised that before the end of the current calendar year residents would see major relief coming their way.
He also explained to parliamentarians that the installation of a packaged desalination plant at Mullins in St. Peter would allow for the injection of an additional 2.5 million gallons of water per day into the system, which will be pumped into mains along the Ronald Mapp Highway, augmenting supply to a much wider area of the island.
