Within the next few months, the National Housing Corporation expects to double the number of persons working in its programme that will see every apartment for which it is responsible being rewired for electricity service.

Project Manager with the NHC, Roger Ward, told the House of Assembly this afternoon that currently 20 small contractors, each employing between seven and ten workers, had been deployed; and there was a plan to add another 20, which would provide jobs for a further 180 to 200 individuals.

Expressions of interest had already been invited and received, Ward said, adding that a proposal should be ready for the consideration of the board of the NHC in a few weeks.

Meanwhile, work has already started or is about to start on a number of other projects, all of which were being executed by small contractors. They include three houses at Applewhaites, St. Thomas, 15 at Todds, St. John, and five each at Carpenter’s Glade in St. Philip and Leadvale in Christ Church. There are also plans for 25 homes at Parish Land in Christ Church, 24 in Whitepark Road, St. Michael, nine at Rice’s in St. Philip, nine at Clifden in St. John, seven at Farmers in St. Thomas, 275 at Chancery Lane in Christ Church and 172 in Vespera Gardens at Lancaster, St. James.
