Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley believes the time has come for a re-examination of the institution of national heroes in Barbados.
Consequently, Barbadians are about to be asked to recommend who they believe should be added to the portfolio of national heroes. It is anticipated that these recommendations will be completed, submitted to Cabinet for a decision and be ready for announcement by National Heroes Day this year.
Additionally, revealed Prime Minister Mottley, Barbadians will also be asked to submit concept recommendations of what kind of national symbol should be installed in National Heroes Square as a replacement from the Statue of Lord Nelson, which was removed last year. And as Government moves to remake Bridgetown, it has determined that Barbadians will also be asked to submit recommendations of what name should be given to Queen’s Park as a representation of the new republic status the country will take on by Independence Day, 2021.
